I’ve recently reviewed a vacation read, a sick-day read, and now, a deserted island book. You know, for when someone asks you what 20 things would you take with you if you were stuck on a deserted island. As if you could plan for that.

The Lies of Locke Lamora is ideal because, although it is worth the effort, it will take you a very long time to read. I started it on vacation last September. It’s now nearly the end of July. I am the first to admit, I’m not a fast reader, but give me a break.

The story relates one particular and harrowing adventure of the Gentleman Bastards, a gang of well -educated con men in the fantasy city of Camorr (which is transparently inspired by Venice), while delving into the backgrounds of the characters and culture exactly as necessary. Despite its girth, there is no fat on this beast of a book. The environment is rendered in visceral detail; the political intrigues will feel like second-nature by the end of the tale; the characters are real and gritty and funny and rude and flawed.

The first of a trilogy, I’ll be sure to carry the other two Gentleman Bastard books with me when I travel. Just in case.
